Appearance

Knotty Pine refers to a grade of pine which includes knots within the wood which often gives a rustic look. In many cases, you can work around the knots to get smaller, clear pieces out. The wood is a pale yellow that sometimes has a reddish hue.

Workability

Pine works nicely with hand tools and power tools. It's an excellent wood for learning how to hand plane with because it forces the user to maintain super sharp tools. It glues well but tends to finish a bit blotchy if the wood isn’t sealed with shellac or sanding sealer first.

Uses

Pine is lightweight making it an excellent choice for tool boxes, though most of it gets used for construction lumber, interior millwork, and crate making.

Additional Comments

There is nothing quite as nice as the smell of freshly cut pine in the shop. It works well despite being quite soft and looks great with a hand planed surface.
